Frequently Asked Questions

Does physical therapy hurt?

In most circumstances no. However, there are certain conditions, which are naturally painful, and a return to movement can cause an increase in your discomfort. The goal of therapy at our office is to make any and all gains in function with little or no pain. At times pain is an excellent indicator of what to do and when to do it. Remember the patient’s communication with the therapist is crucial for obtaining optimum treatment outcome… so speak up!

What is IMT and how is it different that traditional physical therapy?

Good question! Traditional physical therapy employs the use of modalities (machines) like electrical stimulation, ultrasound, hot packs and TENS units. CenterIMT eloquently explains that 'Integrative Manual Therapy™ is ingrained in the concept of an "Integrated Systems Approach." Simply stated, IMT explores all aspects of the body (musculoskeletal, nervous systems, and lymphatic) which might have roles in a patient's symptoms. Please review 'What is IMT' for a more complete explanation.

How long is an appointment?

The length of a patient’s care is based on the problem(s) the patient comes to physical therapy to be treated for. You and your therapist, along with your physician, will help determine the most efficient course of treatment.

What should I wear?

Loose fitting comfortable clothes should be worn to allow optimal movement and comfort.

You may be asked to wear shorts &/or a tank top depending on your diagnosis so the therapist can properly assess any and all problems.

Will my insurance cover physical therapy?

Most insurance contracts carry provisions for physical therapy treatment. The insurance specialists at our office will work with you and your insurance carrier to answer all of your questions.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

Nebraska is a direct access state, which means you do not need a referral from a doctor to be treated by a physical therapist. However, most insurance companies do require the patient to have a referral from a medical doctor. Therefore, it depends on insurance requirements as to whether a doctor needs to make a formal referral. We, at Integrative Physical Therapy, prefer that your Physician is intimately involved in your care and will make every effort possible to work synergistically with him or her.

Can you treat headaches?
